Hey interwebz, I’ve gotten a lot of messages asking about meditation and any tips/techniques/forms I use personally, so I decided to write this up for anyone who may be interested. I think through taking classes with a great instructor and a lot of trial and error I found a lot of good tips and pieces of info (that goes beyond the basic crap) that may help people who are interested to learn or know more. Here we go!:
There are so many different forms of meditation. What I personally use and what I feel anyone can learn in about five minutes is the technique of mantra meditation. I’m sure you heard of mantras, like the most popular “ohm” one that many like to use. I was taught by another instructor who has been meditating her entire life, and she gave me a personal mantra to use for myself, which is common. It’s sometimes said that your mantra is very sacred and shouldn’t ever be shared with anyone, and you shouldn’t even say it aloud. From what I have learned, the reason is for the word to be heard only inward, and can trigger the meditative state quicker once you have been using it in that way for a while. This whole technique is generally for words that have been used for a long, long time in history and have sacred meanings, however I believe anyone can use a powerful common word or statement that can do the same thing.

My meditation sessions are increasingly becoming unbelievably beautiful, peaceful, and otherworldly. I feel like I’m exploring the universe. One with Love

My name’s Afarin (pronounced Af-rin), and I live in Vancouver. I’m 20 years old. My ethnicity is Iranian, but I unfortunately can barely speak my original language because I have lived in Canada since I was a baby, so I don’t really connect with that part of me anymore. Oh, and I have a little dog named Conan O’Brien.
I grew up with art around me because my mother used to be a painter when I was younger, so I also love to paint and draw, although I’m not nearly as incredible as my mom is.
Soul Study is the name of my tumblr because in the past five years or so, I kind of went through a complete change spiritually, and it was a gradual process that I think I was meant to go through in this physical life. I used to be a hardcore athiest, then agnostic, then just went through a period of learning and understanding a whole variety of different religious views/books and spiritual beliefs. Although I don’t have a specific religion I follow, I’d like to say I’m a believer of all religions, but I guess my beliefs and actions would put me closest to the Buddhist belief. I love meditation and just incredibly enjoy stopping in every moment and observing reality (which sounds odd, but we don’t do that a lot when we go through our daily routines).
I’ve had a few spiritual events happen to me, but the most recent one was what I think brought me into learning more about Buddhism. A few months ago, I was talking about spirituality and consciousness with a friend of mine, and something suddenly happened that absolutely blew my mind, and at the time I had no idea what happened. I just assumed I was going crazy or something and tried to forget about it.
As we were talking, my entire reality changed; it was like I saw life and reality in a completely different way for a minute, and I was so dumbstruck I couldn’t talk. It really scared me in the beginning because I had nothing like that happen to me before. It was like I saw everything for what it really was. Life almost felt like a dream at that moment, and I just felt so connected to everything around me. It’s something I can’t adequately describe in simple words; it’s something you need to experience! What’s more incredible was that as this was happening, i felt a tingling and pressure at the top (crown) of my head, almost like someone was massaging my head (it was such a real feeling that it could not be mistaken or thought up) which freaked me out even more. After I went through this I was so shocked that my friend needed to calm me down from what happened! Hahaha.
Anyway, recently I came across learning more about Buddhism, and learned about chakras. I read the experience of opening the crown chakra and freaked out because what was described was the exact same experience I had went through, and I finally was able to understand the experience. I’m now really into meditation and focused on understanding and learning more about how to experience more things as I had in the past.
So that was a very long paragraph which I’m sure no one will read, but I just decided to post it anyway. Most of my tumblr posts are usually related in some way to spirituality, but on rare occasion feature me or my dog/homie, Conan. Peace & love!
